These are all very advanced skills which most of us often do not expect children to demonstrate. Yet, children from their early years are fully capable of demonstrating these skills when adequately supported.

What we really need to see in play spaces is the element of Interactivity - the opportunity for children to engage into play using all 5 senses, stimulating children's cognitive and physical development.
The play space has to become truly experiential and allow children to explore, manipulate, twist, turn, press, unlock, open, close, create, and reinvent. And this needs to be considered in the initial design.
What we really need is create a Sensory-Balanced Environment which gently stimulates children and invites them to use their senses and their body.
This applies to the choice of colours, shapes, light, music and the design which should be spacious, uncluttered, inviting but at the same time relaxing, soothing and nurturing.
We need play spaces which unleash creativity on all levels and invite children to use their imagination, their body and their talents in such domains as construction, arts, crafts, role-play, fine and gross motor skills, music making, light work, and technology.
Such playgrounds immediately become multi-disciplinary and address whole person learning by allowing children to be the sole authors of their play.
We need Spacious Play areas that offer enough space for unobstructed and safe movement, running and jumping, and role-playing, as well as space for some quiet time and relaxation for those children who need it.
This goes far beyond flat surfaces and calls for smart landscaping, which is called Playscaping, that turns natural land features into adventurous and interactive play areas.
Spacious play spaces help children build more meaningful relationships and offer more relaxed and safer environments to socialise and express themselves.
Play spaces which are too crowded, make children wait long for their turn, or are too noisy and overwhelming - do not support children’s holistic growth, are very frustrating for children and not family-friendly.
We need Safe play spaces that consider children’s age and stage of development offering the equipment and designated play areas that encourage children to take risk safely, and can be enjoyed by different age ranges in all weather conditions.
Such play spaces motivate children to try new challenges, help build confidence about their own abilities, and invite children to spend even more quality time there.
We need play spaces to be Accessible, Inclusive, Appealing and Affordable to all children - the play areas that take into consideration children’s age and stage of development, and address children’s special learning and developmental needs and requirements.
Play spaces offering various play experiences should be within a walking distance from home, and promote play as the best form of learning instead of being a privilege or a reward. And this attitude should be reflected in adequate pricing in cases where entrance fee is being requested.
Good play spaces offer a variety of equipment that appeals to children’s imagination and supports their whole-person growth.
We need Holistic Playgrounds that offer multi-disciplinary and multi-sensory learning as well as stimulating and manageable risk taking and safe challenges that address all areas of child development and are not limited to gross motor skills only.
We need truly unique play spaces no matter where we go because variety is what children need to unlock their full potential.
The same environments, the same contexts, and the same equipment will not offer new learning opportunities and next-level challenges.
And this is exactly what we need to provide to instil the love of learning and motivate children to explore the world.

Over 20 Years of Global Experience
The Pillars of Future-Oriented Play Spaces have been created as a response to our professional evaluations of play and learning spaces around the globe in developed and developing countries for the last 20 years and our personal experiences with them as parents and a world schooling family travelling full time and living abroad.
Our experiences have led us to profound observations on the current status of play in the world, the quality of play spaces, playgrounds and play-based businesses and, among other offerings, has resulted with creation of the Pillars of Future-Oriented Play Spaces as an educational guidelines for play space designers and educators. We have devoted more than 25 years to immerse ourselves in children’s world - we started as teachers, then we ran our own nurseries, supplementary schools and multicultural and multilingual play groups and this has give us enough opportunities to come close to children, observe them and understand their needs.
We designed and provided teacher training for the early childhood sector, taught at universities and assessed and inspected early years provisions in the UK to make sure they meet rigorous standards and have children’s well being in mind.
Then, we started travelling as a family - living in more than 25 countries we have had a unique chance to observe children and families around the world, reflect on various education systems, visit hundreds of play-spaces, schools, nurseries and play centres, speak on numerous educational conferences. We have talked to hundreds of teachers and parents about the opportunities and challenges of modern education and the change they wish to see.
QUALIFICATIONS
Whilst the qualifications are not the most important thing, having certain gives you the advantage of being able to gain the necessary experience in the field.
In our case being a UK qualified assessors allowed us to officially inspect education premises, monitor teachers’s work and the quality and safety of the provision offered to children.
This kind of insight and expertise is crucial if you want to establish a safe and children centred play centre, open a nursery, design an outdoor or indoor play space or train teachers to deliver the highest quality education and care.
